A smartly-implemented game plan and some polished striking proved the difference when Brogan Anderson won the co-main event on the Brace Promotion in Christchurch on Friday night.

The Dunedin mixed martial arts fighter took his professional record to seven wins and two losses when he when he ground out a unanimous three-round decision win over Queenstown's Renan Secco (Carlson Gracie NZ).

The Team Hammerhead fighter has now won seven of his past eight fights, while Secco tasted defeat for the first time in five outings.

The first round had both fighters go through an initial feeling-out process before striking from range, with Secco landing a clean inside leg kick.

Anderson landed some vicious straight and side leg kicks.

With about two minutes gone, Anderson backed the orthodox Secco up with a hard looping left hand from his southpaw stance.

He began finding frequent success with his hands as Secco dangerously poked his chin out, while keenly swinging in exchanges.

Anderson dropped Secco twice in the final minute, but refused to be drawn into a ground battle with the Brazilian jujitsu black belt who had won all his previous fights via first-round submissions.

Both men jabbed and kicked out early in round two before Anderson landed a couple of clean left hands and Secco a nice head kick.

From his back, Secco manoeuvred for submission attempts, but Anderson used his solid frame to keep Secco pinned down and worked his body well.

In round three, Anderson continued to hammer Secco's front leg before Secco attempted a flying takedown when he threw his legs at Anderson.

After trading blows while standing, Secco got the fight to the canvas with about a couple of minutes remaining where he pulled guard and lay on his back with Anderson on top.

With time running out, Secco was constantly attempting arm submissions.

But Anderson was defensively sound as he landed the odd punch, ran the clock down and stuck to Secco like glue before gaining his back right on the bell.

Anderson said he was really happy with his performance.

"I guess it showed composure that I haven't showed so far and I feel like I am improving constantly,'' he said.

In the lightweight main event, Christchurch's Kieran Joblin (17-7) displayed impressive skills when the StrikeForce fighter beat Queensland's Greg Atzori (17-9) via a third-round unanimous decision.
