North Otago

Valley moved to outright lead in Borton Cup cricket with a five run win over Waitaki Boys High School at Weston Park in North Otago cricket Albion demolished St Kevin's College winning by 169 runs at Awamoa Park while Union beat Oamaru by 192 runs at King George Park.

Valley won the toss in its match and batting first, made 262 for five in its 50 overs.

Kelvin Mansfield gave the side a good start with his 24 and after 26 overs Valley was poised at 110 for two.

Byron Neil added 30 but it was Matt Pile with an unbeaten 65 who guided
the side through to 262.

Geoff Mavor added 31 while Geoff Mansfield wasa unbeaten on 30.

Bowling for Waitaki Boys Adrian Myburgh took two for 34 and Sean Todd two for 56.

Waitaki started brightly at 106 for two after 20 overs with Craig Robertson 58 not out.

Robertson went on to make 77 while Dyburgh added an invaluable 48.

Matt Day chipped in with 25 while Sean Todd added the icing with an unbeaten 48 before Waitaki fell five
runs short of victory.

Hamish McKenzie took three for 51 while Pile and Kelvin Mansfield took two wickets each.

Albion demolished St Kevin's College at Awamoa Park.

St Kevin's sent Albion in to bat and, aided by an impressive 110 runs from Brad Kernahan, raced through to 325 before the final wicket fell in the 40th over.

Marshall Smith gave good support with 47 and  Gareth Duncan withg 38 while further down the order Johnny McMann(29) and David Roulston(21) batted well.

Bowling for St Kevin's Tim Gourlay took three for 57 and Peter O'Malley two for 73.
It took only ten overs for Albion to oust St Kevin's, which collapsed to be all out for a mere 56 with Dylan Winter taking five for 23 and Kernahan,three for 27.

A fine innings of 142 from Duncan Drew laid the foundation for Union's 272 all out against Oamaru.

Drew received solid support from Antony Cromwell (21) and Glynn Cameron (29) while bowling for Oamaru Josh Gutsell, Kieran Paterson and Scott Wilson took  two wickets each.

Oamaru lasted only 25 overs as it was dismissed for 80 with Gerry Cunningham topscoring with 23.

Bowling for Union Phil Crossan and Neil Low took four wickets each.

Bowls

The Phoenix club dominated the Sevens playoffs in Oamaru over the weekend.

It took the mens national interclub sevens with four wins over Awamoa with three wins and Meadowbank with two.

Phoenix's Bruce Kelly won both of his singles with wins over Sonny Brow(31-22) and Graham Sangster(31-30) while in the pairs Bob Wilson of Awamoa won both of his games against Bob Campbell(24-18) and John Smith(31-21).

In the OLT Sevens played at Awamoa Phoenix finished with 23 points ahead of Meadowbank on 15 points and Awamoa on 14 points.
Phoenix also took the womens even from Awamoa and Meadowbank.

Phoenix's Kerry Kelly won both of her singles while vin the pairs Meadowbanks Dorothy Breen was unbeaten and in the fours Awamoa's Joan Larcombe came through unbeaten.

Softball

Dodgers beat Rebels,13-11 in senior men's softball.

Richard Kitto put Dodgers into an early lead but Rebels replied with runs to Aaron Barton and Danny Park.

Dodgers then brought home Will Sinclair and Will Wansbrough thanks to a Rick Reid safe hit.

Rebels then replied with four runs which included a Barton automatic homer run but Carl Banks and Jason McCoy added to Dodgers tally.

Dodgers kept Rebels scoreless at its third turn to bat and then scored a massive five runs.

Rebels came back with three runs but Dodgers
sewed it up with thrtee more runs at its last turn to bat.

Top batters for Rebels were Aaron Barton and Manu Taiti while Jason McCoy batted .750 for Dodgers.

Central Otago

Blackstone Hill extended its winning run to four consecutive matches when it beat Albion by seven runs at Luggate on Saturday afternoon.

Braydon Hill (85) was again the side's best batsmen after it won the toss and elected to bat, Hill and opening partner Cameron Nicolson (20) putting on 60 before a wicket was taken.

Brandon Heaney also proved effective with the bat, grinding out 35 and being at the crease as Blackstone Hill reached 188.

Nick Brooker picked up a five-wicket bag for Albion and Ryan Wheeler managed an excellent four for 30 with the ball.

After the lunch break, Albion commenced its chase, with Richard McLeod scoring 40 and Ronnie Kotcamp 37 not out.

Wheeler scored 24 and Hayden Green chipped in with 21.

However, the Albion batsmen failed to score quickly enough, running out of overs seven runs short, finishing at 181 for six.

Four wickets to Nicolson and tight bowling from Sean Moran with two for 24 ensured Albion did not reach the total.

Hill was the man of the match in another excellent batting performance.

He has scored more than 230 runs in just five matches so far this season.

At Queenstown, the home side scored 224 runs in its innings, and Cromwell was bowled out for just 91 in reply.

Michael Collins (16), who attends Otago Boys High School in Dunedin, was the star of the show for Queenstown, scoring 59 and taking five catches behind the stumps in the second innings.

Cameron Fawkner scored a wonderful 68 not out to aid Collins in amassing the total.

The Queenstown wickets were shared among the Cromwell bowlers, Mark Rushton the best of them with two for 18.

Brad Nicholson and Ross Anderson also had two wickets a piece.

Cromwell's batsmen failed to shine, Sam McHugh (27) the only batsman to put his hand up.

Sean Windle and Sean McCone each picked up three wickets for Queenstown but Dipan Tandel did most of the damage with four wickets for 15 runs in a four-over spell.

In the other match of the weekend Alexandra handed Dunstan yet another loss, winning the match by nine wickets.

Batting first, the Clyde-based side was all out for just 104 in 34 overs thanks to some impressive bowling by Alexandra's Brendan Domigan, who had five for 12 of eight overs.

Kyle Hinton picked up a well deserved four-wicket haul also.

In reply, Alexandra cruised to victory losing only one wicket.

Domigan scored 43, with James Worker (31no) and Chris Smith (26no) finishing the job.

Maniototo Eastern

In Maniototo Eastern cricket, a young Ranfurly side notched up another win beating Gimmerburn in a 40-over fixture.

Batting first, Ranfurly scored 144 for the loss of six, Blake Ponton scoring 42 not out and Luke Steele 25.

Cam Gray picked up a handy three for 47 and Tim O'Neill finished with figures of two for 22.

In reply, Gimmerburn could only manage 132 for the loss of nine at the end of its 40.

Matt McSkimming finished with 45 and Steve Blakely 20.

Willie Miller took three for 17 with the ball for Ranfurly, while Steele completed a great all-round performance with three for 26.

The competition featured its second default in the young season with Naseby unable to field a side.

Macraes had the bye.

Softball

Legends finally showed what it is capable of when it beat Dunstan B 19-7 on Saturday afternoon.

The side fielded strongly, keeping Dunstan B scoreless until the third innings.

Home runs for Legends came from Michelle Kinney and for Dunstan B from Stein-Lise Budge.

In other matches, Alexandra White was far too strong for Cromwell College, winning 28-2, and Dunstan A beat Valley 20-7.

In the men's competition, Scottys Soldiers beat the combined Omakau/Pollburn 19-1, while Redpaths beat Terrace Bar 15-5.

ATP defaulted to McCutcheons.

Bowls

Maniototo's sub-centre pennants continued, with Bob Paterson, Bill Morice, Dickson Andrews, Stuart Hore, Roger Andrews, Steve Ralston, and John Thurlow all winning .

South Otago

Round seven of the Bowls South Otago men's interclub competition was played in good conditions.

Milton Blue, with an 8-4 win over Finegand, has moved to the top of the points table, and leads Finegand by two points.

For Milton Blue, Bill McDonald scored two wins, with Sandy McNoe and Brian Cowie picking up the other two wins.

For Finegand, Alan Teraki and Charlie Wyndham scored wins.

In the local derby at Milton, Milton White was too strong for Milton Gold, winning 10-2.

For the winners, John Moana, Murray Grant, Gerry Wyber and Alan Philip all scored one win each.

For the Gold team, Alan Mead scored the only win.

Kaitangata came back to form with a 9-3 win over Clutha Valley.

For Kaitangata, Neville Twaddle, Graeme Hislop, Bill Marshall and Stuart Uren all scored wins.

Tony Hooper led the Valley four to a single victory.

Balclutha kept close to the leaders when it held out Clinton by 8-4.

For Balclutha, Selwyn Anderson, Dave Wolland, Blair Thomson and Gilbert Tweed scored wins, while Alan Mathieson and Doug Sinclair scored wins for the losers.

Owaka came from behind to beat Waihola 8-4.

For Owaka, Bryan Price (2), Lance Ibbotson and Murray Patterson scored the wins, with Neil Walker scoring two wins for Waihola.

Halberg fours

The annual Halberg Trust Optional Fours tournament was held at Stirling last Thursday in windy conditions; The winning team came from Town and Country Club, consisting of Herbie and Marie Rhodes, Heather Crossan and Peter Gosney.

In second placing was the Lawrence team of Norma Hopkins,Arthur Bain, Ngaire Jolly, and Carri Mead.

Cricket

Clinton went to the top of the leader board in South Otago cricket when it beat South Otago High School.

Batting first, SOHS was all out for 109.

Ben Keach made 30 and Tony Ensor's 34 included four sixes and one four, in some big hitting late in the innings.

Outstanding bowling for Clinton came from medium pacer Kurt Thompson, who collected seven wickets for 16.

Clinton replied with 112 for four wickets.

The best batting came from Lochie Anderson 48 not out and Byron Mitchell with 42.

At Lawrence, the home team batted first and scored 225 off 40 overs.

Wil Young (78no), Mark Paterson (60) and Bryce Rishworth (32) all contributed to the total.

Best bowler for Milton was Simon Scott, with two for 43.

Milton managed 185 all out off 37 overs.

Chris Jones (44), Bradley Frost (42) and Brendon Sheath (33) all made starts but could not carry on.

Best bowlers for Lawrence were Bryce Rishworth (three for 42) and Tony Potter (two for 20), as Lawrence won by 40 runs.

At Kaitangata, the home side batted first and was all out for 140.

Jason Young led the way with 34, while Blair Benington (30) and Roger Pennell (27) were the next best.

Good bowling for Owaka came from Gavin Anderson (three for 22 from eight overs), while Quentin Gare took three for 7.

Owaka was dismissed for 66.

Jim Young was 26 not out, and batted right through the innings.

Bowling for Kaitangata, Brady Carmichael took three for 16 from eight overs, while Jason Young, Tony Phillips and Brad Storer took two wickets each, as Kaitangata won by 74 runs.
