Regional sports round-up

CENTRAL OTAGO
- Rhys Chamberlain

No matches in the Vincent twenty/20 cricket competition were played over the weekend due to two defaults and a pitch that was deemed unplayable.

Wet weather during the week ensured that Dunstan was unable to host Albion thanks to a sodden wicket, while Slope Hill was once again unable to field a side to play Blacks Hill so had to default. The same scenario played out at the Alexandra club which had to default to Queenstown.

In the reserve competition, Albion defeated Dunstan High School at Alexandra by 41 runs on the back of an unbeaten century from Andrew Thomson who finished the innings on 106, leading his side to a total of 193. Dunstan High school put up a good fight to reach 153 before being dismissed, Aiden Smith top scoring with 40.

Meanwhile, Blacks Hill managed a two-wicket win over Cromwell at Anderson Park. The home side reached 153 for eight off its 40 overs thanks to 58 not out from Ross Anderson.

Alan Small took three for 33 for Blacks Hill leaving Cromwell a little short on runs. Blacks Hill chased down the required runs in the 33rd over with two wickets in hand. Kieran Eathorne was the best of the Blacks Hill batsmen with 42, while Matt Hore had a good day with both the bat and ball for Cromwell, scoring 38 with the bat and finishing with bowling figures of three for 23.

Bowls
Meadowbank skip Dorothy Breen earned her sixth centre title when, with lead Anne McDonald, she took the women's centre pairs title, defeating Joan Larcombe and Ngaira Campbell 17-9 in the final played at the Phoenix club yesterday morning.

Larcombe went out to a 3-1 lead after three ends but Breen equalised on the next end. The lead seesawed until, with six ends remaining, it was tied up at 9-9. The 10th end was the watershed as Breen picked up five shots to go out to a 14-9 lead and then shut Larcombe out over the next three ends before the game was conceded with one end remaining to be played.

It was all Meadowbank in the men's centre fours final played at the Maheno club yesterday afternoon, with the Peter Wylie skipped four defeating Peter Cartwright's quartet 11-7 in the final.

Cartwright, who has six centre titles to his credit, was making a return after a long layoff but after defeating Hugh Catto in the semifinal yesterday morning found the opposition just too consistent in the final.

Wylie picked up singles on the first two ends, but Cartwright hit back with singles on the next three ends to lead 3-2 after five of the 13 ends. Four shots to Wylie took his side back into the lead and although Cartwright fought back, Wylie's consistency carried his side through to its four shots victory.
