Cromwell is the new holder of the Burnett Shield after its cricket team beat Blacks Hill by seven wickets at Poolburn on Saturday afternoon.

It is the first time since 1974 that Cromwell will have the shield in its trophy cabinet for the winter.

The home side won the toss and batted but struggled for runs as Cromwell's bowlers kept a tight line and length and proved hard to get away. Hamish Wilson was one of the few Blacks Hill players to get into double figures, scoring 17.

Michael Ritchie and Mark Knox each picked up two wickets for Cromwell, while 15-year-old offspinner Gabe Eden finished an impressive spell with two for 17.

Ross Anderson was in fine form with the bat in Cromwell's reply. He made 51 not out including a four to bring up his half-century and win the match. Anderson had help from Knox (31) and Ritchie, who was at the crease on 18 when Anderson struck the winning runs. Cromwell was just two down.

Dunstan also scored a big win, beating Queenstown by 131 runs at Clyde.

Hadley Grubb and Payman Hamadani scored 61 and 58 respectively for Clyde on their way to a fine total of 264 for the loss of seven. Kyle Hinton also batted well, making 40.

Steve Devonshire was the best of the Queenstown bowlers, finishing with figures of two for 41.

The visiting side fell short of the total, making just 133 in reply with 35 extras making up the bulk of the runs. However, Will McIntyre looked good, scoring 29, and Dave Wright managed 24.

But it was the bowling of Sacha Hill that was the highlight of the second innings. He finished his spell with a bag of five wicketsfor 18.

Albion got the win over Alexandra by default.

Palmerston will host the final of the Maniototo Eastern Districts competition after it took care of Gimmerburn by 114 runs at Palmerston.

The match was originally scheduled for last weekend.

However, rain meant it was played on Saturday.

The home side batted first and made 173 for seven from 40 overs. Cam Grubb (43) and Roger Buckingham (34) led the way, while Jeff Grubb was unbeaten on 27.

Tim O'Neill was the best of the Gimmerburn bowlers, taking two for 45 from eight overs.

Gimmerburn was skittled for just 59 in its reply. Cam Grubb had excellent figures of four for seven from six overs, while Sam Porter and Ollie McLelland each picked up two wickets in the win.

Palmerston will play Naseby in the final this weekend.

• Rugby

Woodlands won the annual Arrowtown 10s competition at Jack Reid Park on Saturday after beating Southland team Blues 15-0 in the final.

Twelve teams lined up - four from Central Otago, five from Southland, two from Christchurch and one from South Otago.

Wakatipu had the best result of the Central Otago sides, losing in the semifinal 48-7 to the eventual winner.

• Bowls

The rich vein of form continued from the RSA sides in round 18 of the ECNZ Trophy as RSA 3 and RSA 5 each picked up three wins.

Alexandra W still leads on 67 points from Millers Flat on 64 and three other sides on 62.

In the west zone, Queenstown is on top with 55.164 points, with Bannockburn and Wanaka in second and third respectively.

North Otago

Borton Cup leader Union lost its second game of the season by 17 runs to Albion in the ninth round played on all-weather pitches because of inclement weather on Saturday.

Albion's win took it into second place 20 points behind Union, with three matches of qualifying to be played before the semifinals.

Oamaru gained its fourth win of the season when it beat Waitaki Boys High School by 11 runs, while Valley is tied in fourth place with St Kevin's College after beating St Kevin's by six wickets.

• Sent in to bat by Union, Albion batted through its 50 overs to be 186 for eight at the end of the innings. Marshall Smith (32) and Steve Halliwell (29) led the way, with Scott Guyton late in the game adding an unbeaten 23.

Bowling for Union, Isaac Shields was economical. After seven of his 10 overs he had taken one for seven and he finished with one for 22. Brad Fleming and Jason Todd picked up two wickets each.

Union looked to be heading for a winning total at 72 for three after 18 overs. But after the loss of Jeremiah Shields (35) and Duncan Drew (29) Union slumped to 102 for six after 31 overs. Only an eighth-wicket stand of 57, between Chris Ware (29) and Jason Todd, saw Union rally to 159 before the final wicket fell.

Ricky Whyte took three for 28 while Brad Kernahan and Paul Odell took two wickets each for Albion.

• Oamaru won the toss and batted first against Waitaki Boys. Oamaru started brightly, with captain Anthony Sewell (32) taking the side to 42 for one after nine overs. Midway through the innings Oamaru was poised at 89 for five but Matt Murphy (45) and Scott Wilson (40) added 87 for the sixth wicket, taking Oamaru to 194 before the final wicket fell.

Sam Wicks was the leading bowler for Waitaki Boys, taking three for 37 off nine overs, while Stephan Groblar and Hayden Tisdall took two wickets each.

Waitaki Boys started brightly to be 51 for one after 10 overs but with the dismissals of Groblar (71) and Tisdall (20) the innings lost momentum, though George Upton made 30. However the total of 183 was 12 runs short of victory.

Murphy took three for 51, while Roly Senior, Ben Guild and Scott Wilson took two wickets each for Oamaru.

• Valley sent St Kevin's in to bat first and only player-coach Tim McCormick (32) showed much resistance, as the side slithered to 77 for eight, before the 10th wicket went down at 81.

Andrew Fisher led the way for Valley, taking four for 15, while Matt Pile, Nick Kelland and Blair Malcolm took two wickets each.

Valley cruised to victory, needing only 25 overs to make the required runs for the loss of four wickets. Matt Pile was unbeaten on 33, while Brodie Flannery took two for 32 off his 10 overs.

South Otago

Kaitangata beat Owaka in senior cricket matches played in South Otago on Saturday.

Overnight rain shortened games and mid-afternoon rain caused further stoppages.

Kaitangata batted first against Owaka and scored 221 for nine wickets from its 37 overs. Jason Young led the way with 85, followed by Matt Herring (30 not out) and Brad Sutton (20).

Quentin Gare, Tony Miller and Francis Parker took two wickets each.

Owaka, in reply, reached 135 for seven. Quentin Gare batted through the innings for 46 not out, and Reece Pullar was next best on 23.

Best bowling for Kaitangata came from Matt Herring, three for 17 from seven overs.

• Clinton batted first against Lawrence and scored 98 for eight from its 20 overs.

Heath Culbertson (22 not out), Kerry Craig (21) and Kurt Thomson (18) were the main scorers.

Bowling for Lawrence, Dave Alderton and Tony Omelvena each took three or 19.

Lawrence in reply scored 99 for five, with the best Tony Potter (21 not out), Bryce Rishworth (24) and Sam Wyber (16).

Kerry Craig, two for 23, and Kurt Thomson, also two for 23 were the best bowlers. Lawrence won by five wickets.

Bowls

Round two of the men's pennant series was played in cold, damp conditions on Saturday.

Town and Country scored a narrow win over Clutha Valley, 7-5. Barrie Keach scored two wins for the winner.

For Valley, Jimmy Souness and Ken Rishworth had one win each;Stirling beat Owaka 8-4. For the winner, Jamie Nicol had two wins, Munro Bunting and John Sutherland one win each.

For Owaka, Tom Dallas and Bryan Price had one win each.

Milton Gold scored the biggest win of the day, 12-0 win over Milton White. Max Taylor and Arthur Mead had two wins each, while Peter Hunter and Ian Wyber added one win each.

Waihola was too good for Clinton, winning 8-4. Neil Walker and Bill Everett had two wins each. Alan Mathieson scored two wins for Clinton.

Finegand won its game against Kaitangata, 8-4. Dave Roxburgh had two wins, and was supported by Alan Teraki and Charlie Wyndham with one win each. For Kaitangata, Peter Brooks and Neville Twaddle had one win each.

Balclutha continued its good form with a 8-4 win over Kaka Point in the match of the day. For Balclutha, Noddy Thomson and Bill Barron had two wins each. For Kaka Point, Ken Stephens and John Hurst had one win.
