North Otago

Union beat Valley by nine wickets in a game that lasted only 42 overs. Valley, sent in to bat by Union, was dismissed for 62 with Brad Fleming returning the outstanding figures of five for four, while Chris Ware, who took the first four Valley wickets, finished with four for 24.

With Antony Cromwell (38 not out) leading the way, Union cruised to 66 for one in the 11th over.

Albion won the toss and batted first against Waitaki Boys' High School. Albion lost opener Steve Halliwell to the fourth ball of the game but Hayden McKenzie added a solid 46, which included four fours and a six. Albion slumped to 116 for six and 158 for eight but determined batting from Scott Guyton (20) and Ricky Whyte (22) carried Albion through to 183 before the final wicket fell in the 46th over. Bowling for Waitaki Boys', player/coach Stephan Grobler took three for 23, while promising young leg spinner Matt Munro took four for 37 off 9.2 overs.

Albion opening bowler Dylan Winter and Gareth Duncan gave Waitaki Boys' an encouraging start, bowling 13 wides in the first four overs, but with the dismissal of Grobler for 17, the Waitaki Boys' innings lost substance and the side fell to 91 for five after 28 overs. Paul Odell, five for 13, and Winter, two for 28, saw Waitaki Boys' dismissed for 116 in the 41st over .

Union will meet Albion in the Borton Cup final at Whitestone Centennial Park next Saturday at 12.30pm.

Bowls

Brenda Hope, of Phoenix, took the women's Champion of Champion triples, beating Meadowbank's Mary Watson 17-11 and Awamoa's Wilmae Caldwell 17-13.

Caldwell beat Watson 22-11 to take second place.

The Wilmae Caldwell Pairs was completed during the week with the Meadowbank C combination of Nan Blair and Thelma Coffey beating another Meadowbank team of Dorothy Breen and Tui Ellis 10-4 to take first place with 11 wins and a differential of +70, ahead of Breen and Ellis, who finished with nine wins and +62.

• The men's Champion of Champion triples was won by the Meadowbank team skipped by Graeme Sangster. Sangster beat Neville Ludemann, of Maheno, 25-11 in the first round, and in the semifinals accounted for Awamoa's Graeme Larcombe 14-12. In the final against Kurow's Brian Trembath, Sangster won 19-11.

Stuart Hore picked up a big win in the latest round of pennants action from the Maniototo sub-centre bowls competition. The Naseby local beat Tony Andrews, of Waipiata, 36-6. Others winners from the round were Peter Williams, Andy Weir, Rodger Andrews, Terry McCloy, Bill Morice and Ken Weir.

Alexandra C was the only team to get a maximum three wins in round 22 of the ECNZ Trophy competition in Alexandra over the weekend. Alexandra W leads the standings on 79 points from Alexandra SL and Millers Flat, each with 73.

Out west, Bannockburn has clinched the title overall with 67 points. It beat Queenstown on 66.164 and Wanaka on 51.15.

South Otago

Bowls held the spotlight as the last weekend of summer sport was played on Saturday.

In the men's midweek competition, Finegand has opened a six-point lead with three rounds to go.

The teams closest to Finegand, Kaka Point Orcas and Balclutha Red, both lost and have almost given the title to Finegand.

Stirling recorded the biggest win of the day, beating Waihola 29-6. Finegand was too good for Balclutha White, winning 21-8.

In the local derby, K P Seals upset the Orcas 17-13. Owaka made a strong showing with a 21-9 win over Milton Sinners. Town and Country beat Balclutha Red 18-13.

• In the final games of the men's pennants, Balclutha beat Clutha Valley 8-4 and won the A section.

For Balclutha, Noddy Thomson scored two wins, with Gareth Thomson and Blair Thomson recording one win each. The best for Clutha Valley came from Ken Rishworth and Jimmy Souness with one win each.

• Milton Blue was too strong for Town and Country, winning 10-2. For Milton, Gerry Wyber and Bill McDonald had two wins each, with Sandy McNoe adding a further single win. Bruce Campbell won the only game for T and C.
