Surf lifesaving: Anderson leads New Plymouth charge

New Zealand team members Glenn Anderson and Steven Kent displayed their class during the opening session of the national surf lifesaving swimming championships in Wellington tonight.

Anderson, of New Plymouth Old Boys, blitzed the 200m super lifesaver field, clocking a time of two minutes 13.46 seconds to finish 13sec ahead of second-placed Kent, of Titahi Bay.

Kent, who has dominated the event over the past two years, was 1sec ahead of Australian Dev Lahey, although he later fought back to win the 100m manikin carry with fins.

Kent finished that event in 54.54sec, 0.26sec ahead of Anderson, with Titahi Bay teenager John Gatfield third.

Australian Natalie Glossat was too strong in the women's 200m super lifesaver, squeaking home ahead of compatriot Miranda Bell, with New Plymouth's Ayla Dunlop-Barrett third.

Like her national squad teammate Kent, Dunlop-Barrett also enacted revenge in the 100m manikin carry, heading off Orewa ironwoman Rachel Clarke, with Jamie-Lee Reynold, of New Plymouth Old Boys, third.
