Caitlin Deans capped the annual Otago championships with a flurry of wins at Moana Pool at the weekend.

The 16-year-old Neptune swimmer, who already had won six gold medals during the first three days of competition last week, added four on Saturday and one yesterday morning.

Her haul of 11 gold medals was in the women's 15-16 years section, but she was often quick enough to feature in the open races in the evening sessions, when the top eight Otago, Canterbury and West Coast swimmers from any age-group competed.

Deans won the 400m individual medley, 100m freestyle, 200m backstroke and 50m butterfly on Saturday and finishing with gold in the 800m freestyle, during the distance finals yesterday.

Her time in the 400m individual medley (5min 17.44sec) put her into the open race on Saturday night, where she finished third behind Neptune's Kate Godfrey and Canterbury's Hannah Bates.

Godfrey, who won 11 gold medals in the women's 17 and over section during the five day-long championships, won in 5min 6.51sec, Bates was well back in 5min 12.43sec. Deans was just 0.41sec back in third.

Deans also finished third in the open women's 200m backstroke in 2min 27.78sec. Godfrey earned another $25 in prize money by winning in 2min 21.45sec.

Godfrey won four other open finals - 200m individual medley, 400m freestyle, 100m backstroke, and 200m freestyle - during the first two nights, and was also second in the 50m backstroke on Friday night.

Courtland Ellis (16), of Neptune, finished with 10 gold medals after winning three more at the weekend.

He won the men's 15-16 years 400m individual medley (4min 55.86sec), 100m freestyle (55.30sec), 50m butterfly (26.99sec) on Saturday.

Most impressive was his win in the 50m butterfly, where he streaked clear of fellow club swimmer Nick Pryde and won by 2.16sec.

That earned him a spot in the men's open final on Saturday night.

Despite swimming 0.39sec faster than earlier in the day, he had to settle for third behind Canterbury's Satori Dobbie (25.73sec) and Oliver Rayner (26.45sec).

Ellis did go one better in the men's open 200m freestyle final on Friday night, when he touched the wall second in 1min 59.19sec. Canterbury's Christopher McFadden (22) was almost 3sec ahead in first.

Cameron James (21), of Neptune, also finished the championships with a splash. He doubled his gold medal tally from the first few days by winning three more on Saturday morning.

James won the men's 17 years and over 100m freestyle (54.87sec), 200m backstroke (2min 11.68sec) and 50m butterfly (27.23sec).

Next up for Otago swimmers is the Otago Anniversary meet, at Moana Pool on March 19-20.
