Win keeps team in championships

A timely win has kept New Zealand’s under-21 curling world championships alive.

Its women’s team beat Scotland 4-3 in a match which came down to the final end to qualify for the quarterfinals at the junior B championships in Finland.

It plays Denmark in an elimination game this morning.

While Denmark has been unbeaten throughout the tournament, New Zealand competed well against it early on.

The score was level at 6-6 until the final end, before Denmark claimed an 8-6 win.

New Zealand has won three of its matches, while the other two losses were also close.

The team is made up of five Otago curlers: Courtney Smith, Grace Apuwai-Bishop, Zoe Harman, Lucy Neilson and Rachael Pitts.

It needs to finish in the top three to qualify for the major world championships.

The men’s team has already qualified.
