Tapanui trainers Nikki and Barry Blatch were rewarded for their keen eye for a horse when they produced Mr Intelligence and Superstition for upset wins at Oamaru yesterday.

Mr Intelligence broke his maiden in race 3, paying $24, then Superstition scored at a $17 price in race 6.

Barry Blatch said the key to the pair's improvement came when they stepped on to an improved track.

At a heavy 10 rating, the Oamaru track was hardly in fast order yesterday. But it was significantly better than the heavy 11 surfaces of recent Southland meetings.

''We probably weren't expecting that, but this is a much better track than what they have been racing on,'' he said.

The Blatches are hopeful Superstition can go even better once southern tracks improve further.

''We really like her. She gives us a really nice feel at home on a better track,'' Nikki Blatch said.

Rider Brett Murray gave the Bachelor Duke 4yr-old a sweet trip form her barrier 2 draw.

He wove a path between runners in the straight and she fought hard to score by a length and a-quarter in her 1400m maiden race.

Mr Intelligence put an indifferent run of form behind him with fighting win in maiden company over 2200m.

The Niagra 4yr-old raced on the pace throughout and struck the lead at the top of the straight for rider Jacob Lowry.

Runner-up Bahhgoofy looked as if he had Mr Intelligence's measure 100m from home, but the Tapanui galloper fought hard to kick back and win.

The step up for just his second attempt past 2000m was the key to the galloper's turnaround in form.

''He really fought hard. A bit of ground is what he has needed,'' Barry Blatch said.

The wins vindicated the couple's judgement after they bought both horses from an online auction site.

Southland mare Picture Me Rollin added to her impressive race record when easily winning race 4 yesterday.

The 5yr-old made easy work of racing first up over 1600m on a heavy track.

She produced a big finish to win by a length and a-half in rating 72 company.

The talented Highly Recommended mare is likely to have the second start of the season at next week's Melbourne Cup day meeting at Wingatui.

North Island galloper Rocanto breathed life back in to his career with his first win in almost two years in race 1.

The Steven Marsh-trained 7yr-old had been on the brink of retirement after going winless since November 2017.

Rocanto got back in to winning form in the easiest of circumstances when holding out just three rivals in rating 82 company over 1200m.

In-form apprentice Kozzi Asano had the Per Incanto galloper in front soon after the start and they went on to a convincing four and a-half length win.
