Racing: Australian pair in Cup

Washakie and stablemate Be Good Johnny have been confirmed for the $1 million New Zealand Trotting Cup after finishing first and second in a free-for-all at Albion Park on Saturday night.

Washakie prevailed by half a head from Be Good Johnny in a 1.58.5 mile rate for the 2138m (mobile).

It was the 20th win for Washakie in 55 starts.

The Badlands Hanover-Shoshoni Sunrise gelding won 11 races in New Zealand when trained by Steven Reid.

Washakie has been racing in Australia for two years.

He is trained by John McCarthy, who gained a second placing in the 2006 New Zealand Cup with Cobbity Classic.

Washakie and Be Good Johnny join other Australian-trained horses Karloo Mick and Smoken Up in the NZ Cup.

It is the biggest representation for Australia in the race.

Form from the Kaikoura Cup today could have a bearing on the field for the NZ Cup.

The final payment has been made for 23 horses and the field is restricted to 15.

• Raglan, now trained by Tim Butt and Phil Anderson, won a workout at Rangiora on Saturday.

The Sands A Flying 4yr-old has won three races, including his last start at Addington on October 9 from the stable of Bryan Lilley.

• Peruvian Hanover sired his first NZ winner when Peruvian Lass won at Palmerston North yesterday.

The Life Sign stallion has sired 19 winners in North America.

Peruvian Hanover won 28 races and took a time of 1.48.8 as a 4yr-old.

"The pleasing aspect is that she [Peruvian Lass] is out of a mare by Christian Cullen," Ian Dobson, the Christchurch owner of the 3yr-old filly, said.

He imported Peruvian Hanover as a cross for mares by his champion stallion, Christian Cullen.

Peruvian Lass is the first foal of Princess Cullen, an unraced mare.

Dobson races Peruvian Lass with Graeme Rogerson, the co-trainer with Steven Reid.

Peruvian Lass gave stable junior driver Simon Lawson his seventh win in the past four days.

Lawson (18) drove three winners on the first night at Manawatu and another at Alexandra Park on Friday night.

Lawson is in his second season.

He drove 15 winners last season.
