Strathmores Charm gave Gerald Cayford the perfect start to his stint as Forbury Park president when she took care of the maiden trotters at Forbury Park last night.

In a race which was quickly whittled down to five, then four, contenders due to the bad manners of others, the Billy Heads-trained mare put together a tidy performance at her fourth career start.

Driver Nathan Williamson did not pull the earplugs, suggesting the 4yr-old mare won with a little in reserve. Cayford and Heads lease the daughter of Monkey Bones from Taranaki horseman Laurie Fleming.

''It's probably the best one I've got, I think,'' Cayford said.

''We've had a few that have won a few but ability wise, she's still learning and she's going good.

''I tell you what, it's going to be a big night tonight.''

It was also a big night for OK Medley, after Elite Medley continued the outstanding record of the OK Bye mare with her win in the 1700m c0 fillies and mares' mobile pace.

Elite Medley, a Live Or Die mare, is the fifth individual winner out of OK Medley, whose other winners include Winnies Mak and Winnies Central.

The 4yr-old was bred by Peter Marshall, a long-time stable client of Tony Barron, who owns Elite Medley.

''It's been a terrific family for us for 20 years, really, and she's got a a fair bit of ability, but I haven't been able to prove it,'' Barron said.

''She was just typical of the family but I didn't think she would still be a maiden by now.''

Paul Court was full of praise for the progeny of Shadow Play.

He reined home the 3yr-old filly Beyond Belief, who qualified in January, to a maiden win over 2700m.

It gave Court and his father, Graham, the honour of having the first New Zealand winners of both sexes for the sire Shadow Play.

Brilliant Strike is the other progeny of the American stallion to win.

He triumphed as a 2yr-old at Winton in May and earned his second career victory at Rangiora on Thursday.

"They're the only two we've had, and I tell you what, I'd love a stable full of them,'' he said.

''They're beautiful pacers and everything you really want.''
