Racing: Every win 'a great pleasure'

There is a certain satisfaction about training a trotter to a victory.

Smaills Beach trainer Ray Hanson was reminded of that when Face Value won at Forbury Park on Thursday night, Hanson's first win as a trainer since February 2011.

''I know they seem few and far between but every one you win is a great pleasure,'' Hanson said as he took the gear off the Pegasus Spur mare after the race.

Hanson was given the mare by her previous trainer, Craig Buchan, who had eked one win and five placings out of the 6yr-old from 35 starts.

''She'd been out for three weeks when I got her off Craig,'' he said.

''With the beach and all that, it was just different training. She's always been a nice horse, but she's a bit funny at times.

Her peculiar nature extends to the race track - even rearing its head last night despite her win, as she broke with 2400m to go.

''[With] that early break, there was absolutely no reason for it. And [driver] Jonny [Dunn] said in the preliminaries he gave her a couple of whips and he said she was good as gold.

''The one thing about her is she doesn't break for long.''

Face Value has raced six times for Hanson and he said the regular racing ensures her work between races is reasonably light.

''They'll get three days off, the pair of them [Face Value and Lima Lad] until Monday.

''Then with a bit of luck, I'll catch the beach with a bit of jogging and then strong work on the Tuesday and that'll do her.''

Hanson also has the option of using a training track at Smaills Beach if the tides are not working in his favour.

Hanson is joined in the ownership by Forbury Park Trotting Club committee member Ken Campbell.
