Hurricane Bromac, who was given away by his breeders, credited trainer Robert Dunn with his first success from his new stable complex at Woodend Beach, when he won at Nelson on Sunday.

Dunn leased the stable on May 1 from trainers David and Catherine Butt and placed his son John in charge of the operation.

Piper Heidsieck also won from the new quarters on Sunday and Kotare Kano and Formidable finished second.

"I am pretty pleased with the results and I have always been a fan of beach training," Dunn said.

Master Musician, a prolific winner for Dunn, was trained at Spencer Beach as were his other top performers, Panky's Pacer and National Glory, the latter winning a Nelson Winter Cup.

Dunn has 16 horses at Woodend Beach and still retains his main stable complex at West Melton where he is preparing 24 horses.

Hurricane Bromac repaid Dunn for his perseverance when he impressively won at his first start.

Dunn said the son of Christian Cullen and the first foal of Humminbird was such a poor specimen as a youngster that Ian Dobson, who stands Christian Cullen, took the foal back from breeders Bob McArdle and Richard Sissons and gave them a free return service to Christian Cullen.

McArdle and Sissons had bought Humminbird back from America.

"He was born with poor conformation and it wasn't until he was ridden in saddle at the beach as a 3yr-old that he started to show some of his potential," Dunn said.

Piper Heidsieck and Hurricane Bromac will back up today as well as the other six Dunn pacers from Woodend Beach who raced on the first day.

"Hurricane Bromac should be hard to beat again," Dunn said.

Piper Heidsieck is well placed to repeat his success in the Nelson Winter Cup today.
