Racing: Into Jewels field

JB Maguire will bypass a race at Addington tomorrow night now that he has entered the field for the Harness Jewels at Ashburton on Saturday.

JB Maguire is in the field for the 3yr-old division with the scratching of his stablemate Matt Maguire. Mark Jones is listed as the driver.

"He [Matt Maguire]) has an ankle issue," trainer Cran Dalgety, said.

"I had thought about starting "JB" at Addington and Ashburton but it is just asking a bit much."

JB Maguire has won four of his nine starts and he has not finished further back than fourth.

He has twice beaten the in-form Ultimate Player, but he has not raced against the best 3yr-olds.

Dalgety is pleased with Smiling Shard, a candidate for the 4yr-old division of the Harness Jewels.

Smiling Shard has bounced back after an unplaced run in the New Zealand Messenger on May 6.

"I may have taken the wrong option starting him in the Messenger after the Taylor Mile and the Interdominion. He has been back swimming and enjoying it," Dalgety said.

Smiling Shard won the 2yr-old division of the Jewels at Ashburton. He won the Ashburton Cup in December when Stunin Cullen finished second.

Raging Bull, the smart 2yr-old in the Dalgety stable, has been turned out.

"He is a big horse and had a crack in a foot and became unwell, so he is out for two months."

Four Starzzz Flash sprinted his last 800m in 55.8 in a workout at Rangiora yesterday in preparation for the Jewels.

Four Starzzz Flash won the workout by a length and a-half in 3.22.7 for 2600m after starting from 20m. He was driven by Dexter Dunn, who drives race rival Smiling Shard on Saturday. Frank Cooney has replaced Tony Herlihy as the driver declared for Four Starzzz Flash.

Samuel James won a 2600m workout in 3.20.6, the last 800m in 56.4 yesterday. Living Memory won over 2000m (mobile) in 2.30.7.

Montecrengle, who is engaged at Addington tomorrow night, transferred to the Yaldhurst stable of Paul Ellis after finishing second at Winton on Sunday. Montecrengle won twice from nine starts when trained at Winton by Lauren Pearson.

Gold Invasion, The Red Rose and Juryman will race at Forbury Park tonight, rather that closer to home at Addington tomorrow.

Goldstar Invasion is in a penalty-free race in the Australasian Young Drivers' series. A winner at Addington two starts back and second to Burano there last Friday, Goldstar Invasion will be driven by Ashlee Siejka, representing New South Wales. The 22-year-old has driven 83 winners this season and 327 lifetime.

Other Australian representatives are Chantal Turpin (Queensland, 220 wins); Ellen Tormey (Victoria, 89); Nathan Ford (Tasmania, 190), Jake Webster (South Australia, 37) and Justin Prentice (Western Australia, 109).

The New Zealand representatives are Dexter Dunn (727), Matthew Williamson (126), Zac Butcher (113) and Joshua Dicklie (66).
