Racing: Kiwi Ingenuity wins NZ Cup trial

Kiwi Ingenuity rounded off her New Zealand Cup preparation when she led all the way to win the Cup Trial at Addington last night.

The 6yr-old began well from barrier one for trainer-driver Robbie Holmes and held her four rivals at bay in the run home to win by two lengths.

She recorded 3.16 for the 2600m (a 2.01.2 mile rate).

She ran the last 800m in 56.1 and the final 400m in 29.1Kiwi Ingenuity finished third to Stunin Cullen and Highview Tommy in the Ashburton Flying Stakes at her last start.

She was seventh in the New Zealand Cup last year.

Power Of Tara, who settled third, ran on for second with Monkey King, who settled last, finishing well late for third.

He made a safe beginning from the unruly position.

Hands Christian ran his last 800m in 56.5 and 400m in 27.6 as he headed towards the Sires' Stakes Final on Tuesday.

Sno's Big Boy ran his final 800m in 58.4 to win the main heat for trotters.

Toledo, winner of the $50,000 Sales Series Pace in fast time at Kaikoura on Monday, has his next start at Addington on Tuesday.

Toledo ran the 2400m in 2.58.9, the same time that was recorded by Smiling Shard in the Kaikoura Cup.

It was the sixth win and fourth in his last six starts for Toledo, who is trained at Clevedon by Gareth Dixon for Kerry and Marilyn Hoggard.

A 4yr-old gelding by Christian Cullen from Scuse Me, Toledo was a $135,000 purchase at the 2008 Australasian Classic yearling sale.

Big Dog, the winner of 12 races is now trained by Brent Mangos and Hayden Cullen at Pukekohe.

Big Dog, who has not raced since March, was previously with Barry Purdon and Scott Phelan.

Yankee One, a winner from three starts, is now in the Pokeno stable of Dave and Clare McGowan.

Yankee One won first up at Winton last December when trained by Winton owner Trevor Wilson.

Dave McGowan has leased a share in Yankee One, who has not raced since March.

Georgetown will have his first start from the stable of Ian Small in the New Zealand Cup on Tuesday after being sold by his owners Ed and Caroline Wardwell and Grant Dickie.

The 6yr-old won 10 races from the Ken Barron barn.

He finished ninth in the Kaikoura Cup at his last start when driven David Butcher, who retains the drive in the Cup.

Lord Forbes, first emergency for the New Zealand Cup, ran the last 800m in 55.3 and the final 400m in 27.3 when he won the 2-7win heat over the 2200m (mobile) at the Invercargill trials yesterday in 2.43.3 (a 1.59.4 mile rate)Western Cullen was 5.4sec inside the qualifying time when he won a 2yr-old heat over 1700m (mobile) in 2.08.3, a 2.01.4 mile rate, the last 800m in 57.5 and the final 400m in 27.7.

Western Cullen is a gelding by Christian Cullen and the first foal of the speedy filly Western Dream, who won 14 of her 27 starts for stakes of $336,361 for Vin Devery, the trainer of Western Cullen.

Western Dream won six of her seven starts as a 2yr-old, including the Nevele R Stud Stakes at the Cheviot meeting and the Caduceus Fillies Classic at Alexandra Park.

Her wins at 3 included the Ladyship Stakes, Sires' Stakes Fillies Final, Nevele R Fillies Final and the New Zealand Oaks.

Some Say The Best qualified as a trotter 6.7sec inside the required time.

The 4yr-old Dr Ronerail-Uncatchable mare is trained by Jason Hope.
