Racing: Nairn finds key to trotter

The Graeme Rogerson-owned and trained trotter You're The Man was driven to success at Addington yesterday by Leeston horseman Paul Nairn.

Nairn is now likely to take over the training of the well-bred gelding Rogerson sent You're The Man to Nairn to gain a second opinion on a few issues affecting the 5yr-old.

"Graeme rang me and asked me too see if I could sort the horse out. When he told me his breeding I felt it was a worthwhile exercise. He has had stifle soreness.

"I did not expect him to win yesterday as I was trying half hopples on him for the first time and I did not know how he would go under race conditions.

"He worked well in them on Friday but raceday is another kettle of fish."

You're The Man is by Sundon and the fifth foal of the champion mare Pride Of Petite, the winner of 35 races for stakes of $811,816.

Paul Kerr, the Ohoka horseman, drove his first winner since the 2003-04 season when Bet The Max was successful at Addington yesterday.

Kerr has had only 13 drives since he drove Congo Breeze to win at Addington in September 2003.

Kerr is likely to be driving more of his stable runners after his son, Mitchell, who holds a junior driver's licence, moved to Papakura to work for Gareth Dixon in June.

"Mitchell should have more opportunities in the bigger stable," Kerr said.

Kerr moved to Ohoka two years ago and has a team of 17 mainly young horses in work.
