Racing: Success a pleasant surprise

Gore trainer Jenn Sheridan was looking forward to getting her first winner, but she was not expecting the win to come yesterday.

Sheridan, a plant technologist at Silver Fern Farms, trains the 4yr-old mare in her spare time for a group of family and friends.

But only Sheridan and her son Christian (11) were on hand as they watched the daughter of Brilliance nab Unicorn Power on the line.

Sheridan had been hoping for some rain, as Thegreatpickpocket seems to be more suited to wet tracks.

Did she think the mare was capable of winning a race?''Definitely. Not today, though. I thought it was a bit dry for her,'' Sheridan said. ''We really actually only came to give her a trip away.''

Sheridan took up her trainer's licence 18 months ago after a long spell from the racing industry.

''I used to track ride for Gary Gibson and then had a bit of a break from race horses for a while,'' Sheridan said.

''We just work one [horse] and we do a wee bit of agistment at home, too.''

Sheridan thinks the best will be yet to come from Thegreatpickpocket once the sting is out of the southern tracks.

''She'll be handy and she'll be handy on a wet track - that's what she wants. She's a half to The Great Snowman of Gai Waterhouse's [six wins, $A261,143] so she's well bred.''
