Ron and Maree Dawe figured as winning owners with Excuse Maker and What A Card at Oamaru yesterday, both horses trained by Phil Burrows and driven by stable junior driver Brett Thomas.
The Dawes, of Rangiora, share the ownership of Excuse Maker with Ron's brother, Kevin and his wife and father, Ray Dawe.
• Mosgiel trainer Darryn Simpson continued his good season when Maddison Renee won yesterday. She was also successful at Roxburgh on Thursday.
Simpson had won with Pinot Gris at Cromwell on Sunday when the she set a track record for a 3yr-old filly of 2.15.5 for 1800m (mobile). She lowered the mark of 2.16.2 set earlier on the programme by Whekau.
Simpson also also won races this season with Leave Mealone (three), Lochlea and Bwana. His tally of eight wins at the half way mark of the season is double his best for a whole season.
Leave Mealone has been sold to Australia by the Ngaio Cove syndicate.
Maddison Renee has now won five races for Christchurch breeders Paul and Pauline Renwick. She has been driven in her wins by Nathan Williamson.
Maddison Renee has been inseminated three times in recent weeks by Christian Cullen and her connections will know in 16 days if she has conceived.
• Pemberton Shard, who cleared maiden ranks, is a 3yr-old half sister by Christian Cullen to Smiling Shard, the million-dollar stake-earner. She is trained by Brad Mowbray for Invercargill breeders Debbie and Mark Smith, who have shares in the filly leased to Bruce Dawson, of Christchurch, his son Allan, of Perth; Dave Robinson and Neil Van Schaik, both of Invercargill.
Pemberton Shard was a replacement service to Christian Cullen for a colt who died when 10 days old.
Sly Shard is an embryo transfer mare.
Jag's Invasion was most impressive winning yesterday and Live The Dream won the other trot comfortably.
