Racing: Wellington Cup main target for Borninthestates

Borninthestates, who mastered top weight of 59kg to win the Invercargill Cup on Saturday, has the Wellington Cup as his mission.

"I've had the Wellington Cup in mind for him for a while," Michael Pitman, his trainer, said.

"He will will probably race in the Waikouaiti Cup and Kumara Nuggets in between times."

Borninthestates ran second to Megapins in the 2009 Wellington Cup after wins in the Queenstown and Greymouth Cups and a second to Quantum Dude in the Kumara Nuggets in lead-up races.

He won the Dunedin, Riverton, Greymouth and Waikouaiti Cups and Kumara Nuggets the previous season.

The 8yr-old has bounced back from a bowed tendon sustained during a Queensland campaign in the winter of 2009. He was away from racing for 10 months. He won the Queenstown Cup at Cromwell for the second time this month.

It is the biggest weight carried by an Invercargill Cup winner since Great Sensation mastered 63kg in 1960. Ark Royal carried the same weight the previous year.

Pitman has also won the race in 1991 with Luskin Lady and 2005 (Our Shiraz).

The stable also won races on Saturday with Fellini, Hauturu and Tango Lass. The last two joined the stable about a month ago from the North Island. The quartet of winners were ridden by Jamie Bullard.

Pitman said Fellini will target the Kurow Cup.
