Christchurch owners Phil and Glenys Kennard and Neil Pilcher capped a big season when Machs A Flyin won the 2yr-old race at Addington yesterday at his first start.

The Kennards and Pilcher are also in the ownership of Smolda, Fly Like An Eagle and Border Control.

Smolda has won the Harness Jewels and New South Wales Derby and he was was named Three-Year-Old Pacer of the Year on Saturday night.

Fly Like An Eagle won the New Zealand Derby. The 2yr-old Border Control has won three of his six starts in New Zealand.

Border Control and Fly Like An Eagle have both won heats of the Breeders' Crown in Australia and now go to the semifinals.

Phil and Margaret Creighton, of East Taieri, are also in the ownership of Machs A Flyin, Fly Like An Eagle and Border Control.

The same owners also have Major Mark (11 wins), who is making good progress in a fresh campaign after being gelded.

Their horses race out of the Rolleston stable of Mark Purdon, who also won yesterday with Christian Banner.

Purdon and co-trainer Grant Payne ended the New Zealand season with 138 wins, the fifth successive time they have topped the premiership.

It is the best tally since Roy and Barry Purdon won 168 races in 1993-94 season.

Machs A Flyin was bred by Vicki Burnett, who died 10 days ago at the age of 40.

She trained horses with her husband Rick at Leeston. Dutchess, a member of their team, finished second to Sunrise Delight in the final of the Golden Girls series for trotting mares yesterday.

Vicki bred Machs A Flyin from a mating of Mach Three and Flying Sands.

She was the former Vicki Cowan and her previous husband, the late Peter, won 11 races with Flying Sands.

The daughter of Sands A Flying and Calrossie won over 1950m (mobile) in a 1.56.5 mile rate at Addington.

Flying Sands has also left Supreme Gem, the winner of five races.

Pilcher bought Machs A Flyin from Burnett as a six-month-old weanling.

Terrorway, the former Westwood Beach pacer, won the group one Blacks A Fake (formerly Winter Cup) at Albion Park on Saturday night.

He prevailed by half a head from Smoken Up in a 1.58.8 mile rate for the 2680m (mobile).
