Unique Star signalled a bold showing at Nelson tomorrow, after success in the 1-2win heat for trotters, for his new trainer Mark Jones, at the Ashburton trials yesterday.

The 6yr-old recorded three wins from the stable of John Versteeg.

He had his last start for Versteeg when unplaced at Addington on December 4.

Unique Star covered the 2400m yesterday in 3.14.4, the final 800 in 59.2 and the 400 in 28.1.

"I have had him about three weeks. He usually goes good at trials but it is sometimes a different matter on raceday," Jones said.

Ricky May will replace Jones on Bunda Cliffs, an in-form runner at Nelson.

Jones is the regular driver of Bunda Cliffs who is trained by his father, Peter.

Bunda Cliffs recorded his first win on the first day of the Nelson meeting last year.

The 4yr-old was beaten a neck by the talented Arma Xcellent at Washdyke on January 1 at his last start.

He has also finished second to Malosi at Forbury Park and filled the same placing behind Reine Guinevere at Addington in his last five starts.

Jones will drive his stable runner Specks Pertum in the race.

He has been placed in his last three starts.

Jones said Alexis would have her next start in the Nevele R fillies series heat at Waterlea tomorrow week.

The 3yr-old daughter of Courage Under Fire was an impressive fresh-up winner at Washdyke on Monday.

She was having her first start from the Jones stable.

She won by five lengths in a 1.58.5 mile rate for the 2000m (mobile).

Jones drove her to win at Forbury Park as a 2yr-old when she was trained by Bruce Negus.

She also won a race from the stable of Tony Herlihy.

She beat the up-and-coming Arden's Darlin in those two wins.

"She has got a good turn of speed and she would need it to match the Purdon runners," Jones said.

"She'll head to Auckland after that and I intend to travel with her," Jones added.

Perfect For Us created a fine impression when she won a trial by 21 and a-half lengths.

The 5yr-old trotting daughter of Sundon and Gee Abby was driven by her Ashburton trainer Doug McCormick. She ran the 2400m in 3.12.

Perfect For Us has had two unplaced starts at Forbury Park and Rangiora.

Innes Lad looked close to worthwhile form for trainer Dean Taylor when he won a maiden pacers' trial in 3.10.4, the final 800 in smart 57.1 and the last 400 in 26.7 for driver Mark Jones.

The Cameleon 5yr-old has been unplaced in two starts.

Petra's Star will be looking to keep her unbeaten record intact in the heat of the Southland Oaks at Ascot Park today.

The daughter of Christian Cullen and Lillian impressively won her only start recording a 1.56.9 mile rate for the mile at Winton on October 19.

She beat the useful Amakudari by a nose. She has drawn three today over the 2200m (mobile).
