New Zealand women's pair, double sculls, quad qualify for Tokyo Olympics

Three New Zealand women’s rowing crews have qualified for next year’s Olympics.

The pair, lightweight double sculls and quadruple sculls all secured spots for Tokyo at the world championships in Austria yesterday.

Zoe McBride and Jackie Kiddle won their lightweight double semifinal.

They finished in 6min 48sec, 3sec faster than their nearest competitor and 2sec ahead of the other semifinal winner.

Grace Prendergast and Kerri Gowler won the pair semifinal, moving directly to the final.

Their time of 6min 57sec put them 4sec ahead of second-placed United States and marginally ahead of other semifinal winner Australia.

In the quad, Kirstyn Goodger, Ruby Tew, Sam Voss and Hannah Osborne were second in their repechage to make the A final.

Davina Waddy, Kelsi Walters, Eve Macfarlane and Phoebe Spoors remain a chance of securing a fourth Olympic spot.

They finished fifth in their women’s four semifinal and can qualify by finishing in the top two of the B final.

In the men’s eight, the crew responded well to finish second in its repechage and make the A final.

It needs to finish in the top five to secure Olympic qualification.

The men’s quad and lightweight double sculls both have chances of qualifying via their B finals, as well.
