OBHS stranglehold ended

The George Thorn Trophy has a new home for the first time in 46 years.

John McGlashan College won the trophy awarded for boys aggregate points at the annual Head of the Harbour regatta at the weekend to end Otago Boys' High School's monopoly on it since 1969.

McGlashan rowers finished on top with 41 points, seven more than Otago Boys', while King's High School finished on seven points.

Before 1969, the trophy was only contested between Otago Boys' and King Edward Technical College.

While Otago Boys' lost its long hold on one trophy, it won a couple of others.

Scott Bezett, Corey Lewis, Ben Sinnamon, Aaron Roydhouse and coxswain Robbie Lindsay won the Gibson Trophy for the best secondary schools senior boys coxed four in Otago.

Bezett, Lewis, Roydhouse, Sinnamon and Lindsay then teamed up with Nick Henderson, Tom Chin, Callum Gordon and Marc Herger to win the Phillip Ham Trophy for best senior boys eight.

St Hilda's Collegiate won the Martha Gillies Trophy for best overall girls school.

St Hilda's finished on 28 points, while Otago Girls' High School and Columba College were tied for second on 16 points.

Otago Girls' Karley Wilden-Palms, Juliette Alm-Lequeux, Breanna Thompson, Arnika Fraser and coxswain Amy Hinch won the Otago Polytechnic School of Sport Trophy for best girls senior coxed quad.

St Hilda's finished second and Queen's High School was third.

All trophies will be awarded at the Otago Rowing Association prizegiving in May.
