Rowing: Success for three Otago crews although blustery wind big winner

Strong winds ruined much of the Canterbury rowing championships at Lake Ruataniwha at the weekend, but there was enough time for a few Otago crews to record wins.

With blustery winds peppering the lake on Saturday, racing was postponed for four hours. No boats even touched the water on Sunday as conditions deteriorated.

That meant no finals were raced and winners were picked off the back of the times recorded in the heats.

Tom Grave and Woody Kirkwood (Otago Rowing Club), who finished third in the boys under-17 double scull at the Otago championships at Lake Ruataniwha in December, won in 8min 19.58sec.

Claudia Maker, Josie Cook, Georgia Hay, Brie Shea and cox Mia Knott (North End) won the girls under-16 coxed four in 7min 55.48sec.

Another North End crew, Stella Keown, Lili Sabonadiere, Gabby Hunter, Imogen Corbett and cox Anna Frame, made it a one-two for the club by finishing second in 7min 59.80sec.

North End's boys under-18 coxed eight, made up of Scott Bezett, Corey Lewis, Aaron Roydhouse, Ben Sinnamon, Callum Gordon, Marc Herger, Nick Henderson, Tim Chin and cox Robbie Lindsay, also had a win in 6min 22.75sec.

Despite the poor weather ruining more than half the regatta, most crews got some valuable time on the water before the South Island championships at Lake Ruataniwha next weekend.
