Clutha celebrated their 150th jubilee in style with an impressive 55-24 victory over Crescent at the Balclutha Showgrounds.
As anticipated it was highly physical with Clutha asserting themselves from the outset.
An opening try to No 8 Kael Merrett set the tone, as the home side looked dangerous whenever they had possession. Crescent, however, showed plenty of resilience on defence, while also producing moments of quality on attack.
Ultimately, Clutha’s polish and composure proved the difference. The hosts capitalised on their dominance up front to finish several quality tries out wide.
Midfielder Sosene Te’o rediscovered some of the form that made him so influential last season, crossing for a hat-trick, while lock Tate Colley grabbed a double and was outstanding in the tight exchanges.
Crescent can take pride in their effort, but on the day it was not enough to spoil the celebrations.
West Taieri maintained their position near the top of the ladder with a bonus-point 38-21 win over Owaka in an intense encounter at Swamp Hen Park.
The match began in unfortunate circumstances. West Taieri midfielder Connor Newlands suffered a serious ankle injury that required the rescue helicopter.
Following the delay, West Taieri quickly found their rhythm. They attacked with purpose and forced Owaka on to the back foot with the speed of their play.
Sustained defensive pressure eventually took its toll on the home side as West Taieri crossed for three unanswered tries. Owaka responded before halftime to remain in touch, but the visitors still took a commanding 33-14 lead into the break.
After another brief stoppage while the helicopter landed, the second half developed into a much tighter contest.
Owaka looked more composed with ball in hand, while both defensive units stood firm and made attacking opportunities difficult to come by.
Each side managed one try in the second spell, although the match was soured late for the home side by two yellow cards and a red card.
Clutha Valley delivered one of the performances of the season with a commanding 76-7 victory over Clinton in the Brian Steel Memorial at Clydevale.
Led superbly by No 8 Dean Sinnamon, the Valley forward pack dominated proceedings, consistently winning the advantage line and laying a powerful platform through their set piece.
Valley ran in 12 tries overall, with Sinnamon scoring four of them in a standout display.
Halfback Finn Gilder was equally influential, producing an inspired performance that included a hat-trick of tries.
Toko further solidified third place on the ladder with a hard-fought 31-24 victory over Heriot at Milton.
The contest ebbed and flowed throughout, with momentum swinging regularly between the two sides.
Heriot held a 17-14 halftime lead after responding strongly to Toko’s bright start.
The second half remained evenly contested, with the lead changing hands before Toko eventually held firm under immense late pressure from the visitors.
Dylan Greer and Arnold Dinh were outstanding contributors in the Toko forward pack, helping their side withstand Heriot’s determined finish.
Despite the loss, Heriot can take confidence from a much-improved performance that showed significant progress.
