North Otago might be taking a break for King’s Birthday weekend, but there are still plenty of talking points after the recent round of the Citizens Shield.

Valley yet again remain unbeaten at the top of the table.

The men from Weston have rolled up their sleeves week after week and are in red-hot form as they look to get their hands on the shield for the first time since 2023.

They beat Excelsior for the second time this season — in a repeat of last year’s final — 28-21 last weekend.

Valley now have seven wins and one draw for 35 points — 10 points clear at the top.

Excelsior are next in line with four wins and four losses for 25 points.

Old Boys have leapt into third place after a trail of good performances.

They came from behind two weeks ago with a last-gasp try to beat Maheno and then beat Kurow 36-26 away last weekend.

That helped the Oamaru side notch up four wins and four losses for 21 points.

Athletic Marist have surged back into playoff contention and hold fourth spot.

They produced a huge opening half against Maheno last week, scoring 40 points to run away with a 66-21 victory.

Athies now have a record of three wins, one draw and four losses for 20 points.

Maheno, who had such a good run in round one and sat as high as second, are not far off the pace but have slipped back to fifth.

After last week’s loss, they now sit at three wins and five losses with 19 points.

Kurow have pushed teams all the way this season but sit at the bottom of the table with two wins and six losses for 13 points.

With only six points separating second and fifth spot, the next couple of weeks will be massive as teams build towards playoffs.

Action returns to North Otago next week with Maheno v Kurow, Athies v Blues and Old Boys v Valley.

They will then take a break on June 13 for the North Otago Heartland side to prepare for the Ranfurly Shield clash against Otago in Dunedin on June 16.

The competition then resumes as normal on June 20.
