There does not seem to be too much risk of Citizens Shield pace-setters Valley getting complacent any time soon.

Valley are 11 points clear at the top of the North Otago premier club standings with seven wins and a draw from their eight games. Happy days, then, at the Weston club.

But if you ask veteran captain Cameron Rowland to sum up the season, his answer reflects the fact Valley are always seeking to get better.

‘‘I guess if you judge it on our results, we’ve had a good season,’’ the No 8 said.

‘‘But we haven’t played really well yet. Hopefully that’s to come.

‘‘We’re still looking for a real good performance.

‘‘We’ve probably been guilty of giving away too many penalties in games, and letting teams back in that way. I think when we played Maheno, it was 19-5 against us. You don’t win too many games like that.’’

Rowland might be known as ‘‘Chicken’’ but he has not taken a step backwards while representing Valley for the past decade.

He and workhorse forwards like Jacob Pledger, Anthony Docherty and Jake Greenslade generally ensure at least parity up front, while talented playmakers Isaac Clunie and Ben Paton are complemented by veteran centre Matt Vocea and exciting youngster Joji Rinakama.

Valley do not always have the sheer size and X-factor of a couple of the town clubs, but are usually high on commitment and precision.

‘‘Our defence has been a bit of a positive. We come up against some big boys and everyone is just in the trenches, putting their bodies on the line.’’

There might be a chip on a few Valley shoulders, too.

They last claimed the Citizens Shield in 2023 and have been beaten by Excelsior in the past two finals.

Blues have been a mixed bag this season — they and Old Boys each have four wins from eight games — but Rowland is wary of the defending champions and the other teams.

‘‘I think anyone can beat anyone in this comp. If you make the top four, you’re a chance to win two games and win the shield.’’

Valley play Old Boys tomorrow, while Athletic Marist clash with Excelsior, and Maheno host Kurow.
