Coaching: Gilbert keynote speaker at launch

Former Otago and Highlanders coach Tony Gilbert will help launch the second installment of the Sport New Zealand Performance Coach Advance programme on Monday night.

Gilbert is the keynote speaker for the launch, which starts at the Sargood Centre at 7pm.

The coaching programme, launched last April, is designed to improve the quality of coaching provided to pre-elite emerging athletes.

Otago, one of six regions in the country which runs the programme, provides 12 of the 102 coaches selected annually.

The second intake of Otago coaches includes Otago Volts assistant coach Nathan King, New Zealand under-23 netball coach Lauren Piebenga and Otago Boys' High School First XV coach Ryan Martin.

Although the first year of the programme has been completed, coaches from the original group are encouraged to stay involved into the programme's second year.

During the course of the year, coaches will take part in a series of seminars, involving planning and programming, long-term athlete development, mental skills and best practice in coaching.

They will also work on a professional development plan to continue their development over the next few years.
