An announcement on whether Rugby World Cup games can be held in Christchurch is expected this afternoon.

International Rugby Board (IRB) representatives are meeting New Zealand officials in Christchurch today, and are due to make an announcement at the CBS Canterbury Arena at 3pm.

Rugby World Cup Minister Murray McCully, along with IRB chairman Bernard Lapasset, IRB chief executive Mike Miller, NZ Rugby Union chief executive Steve Tew, Vbase chief executive Brian Pearson and Rugby NZ2011 chief executive Martin Snedden will attend the announcement.

Christchurch is scheduled to host two quarterfinals and five group-stage games, but damage from the February 22 earthquake has called that into question and it is widely expected they will be transferred to other locations.

The IRB has the final say on the locations.

International reports have said the IRB had already decided to rule out Christchurch as an option
