Club semifinals up in the air

The premier club rugby semifinals are in limbo and the Dunedin Metropolitan Rugby Council match committee will meet this morning to decide whether to go ahead as planned.

Heavy rain in the city yesterday forced the Dunedin City Council to close all its grounds.

However, the council left it up to the Otago Rugby Football Union to decide whether to proceed with the semifinals.

The match committee is expected to make a decision by 10am today.

The semifinals were initially scheduled for the University Oval but had to be shifted to Hancock Park due to the poor condition of the wicket block at the Oval.

Harbour is scheduled to play Dunedin in the first semifinal at 1pm, and Southern and Kaikorai contest the other at 2.30pm.

The games could be postponed until tomorrow if conditions are too bad. The match between the Otago Sassenachs and the Southland Spartans at Kettle Park tomorrow is still on.

All  premier  2 and senior grade rugby has been call off, while most women’s and colts’ games have been cancelled.

All Otago premier school rugby games and all junior rugby has been cancelled, while all football in Otago has been called off, with the exception of the men’s premier game between Queenstown Rovers and Roslyn Wakari and the women’s premier match between Queenstown and University B. Both those games are being played at the Queenstown Events Centre.

Premier rugby is expected to go ahead in South Otago and Central Otago but all junior rugby has been called off in South Otago. All rugby in North Otago has been called off. The Citizens Shield semifinals have been shifted to next weekend.
