Neville Selwood received a special 90th birthday present when he was honoured by the All Blacks on Saturday night.

An All Black fan for most of his life, he was presented with a signed All Black jersey by Kieran Read at Forsyth Barr Stadium.

''It was a surprise to me,'' Mr Selwood said, whose birthday present from his family was a ticket to the test between the All Blacks and England.

''I didn't know it was happening. Kieran is such a wonderful player. It is a pity he wasn't playing in the test.''

It was the first time Mr Selwood had seen the All Blacks play at the stadium.

''I watched England play Argentina in the World Cup three years ago,'' he said.

Mr Selwood played rugby at halfback when he was a pupil at Southland Boys' High School in the 1930s but never made the First XV.

He did not get a chance to continue rugby after leaving school, because he joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force and became a navigator on Lancaster bombers during World War 2.

He was part of the RAF 75 (New Zealand) Squadron that carried out strategic bombing in Germany.

Mr Selwood had one scary moment on a sortie to Munich, when his plane was attacked by German night fighters.

''We managed to do a corkscrew into clouds to escape them. I did not know where we were, because our navigation equipment wasn't working.''

He worked as an accountant in Invercargill until 1961, when he trained for the Anglican ministry and served in Balclutha, Northeast Valley and Mornington.

He rose to be an archdeacon and is now chaplain of the New Zealand Bomber Command Association.

His mother lived to 101 and his elder sister celebrates her 98th birthday in Invercargill next month.
