New Zealand's well-drilled police rugby team overpowered a spirited Australian police side in Queenstown yesterday, in a special Anzac Day match.

After the 58-7 win at Queenstown's Recreation Ground, Police Commissioner Mike Bush - who said he would not attend this week's Five Eyes spy meeting at Millbrook Resort - said: ''It's great to see the Anzac spirit.''

Disappointed Australian Police Rugby Union life member Steven Fishpool, a New South Wales inspector, said: ''A week of touring and injuries took its toll and fatigue got the better of us in the end. Credit to New Zealand - they ran away with it.''

One of the Australian players was in Dunedin Hospital with a serious head injury after falling from a central city wall on Sunday.

Mr Fishpool said the 33-year-old was ''progressing as well as can be expected''.

''It's probably brought us together a little bit. Everybody's certainly conscious of looking after each other.''

Many of the players - all the Australians and many of the Kiwis - attended yesterday's dawn service in Queenstown.

The Queenstown game was the third in the Australian team's tour, after a 24-22 loss to Canterbury Police last week and a convincing 43-15 win over South Island Police in Dunedin last Saturday.
