Otago representation in KL 'sensational'

Otago players are set to play a significant role in next month's Youth World Cup in Kuala Lumpur.

A contingent of 14 Otago representatives will take part in the tournament, which will be held between August 8-11.

The strong representation at the tournament was a significant achievement, Otago Touch development officer Grant Milne said.

''The Youth Touch World Cup representation from Otago is nothing short of sensational.

''Twelve players, a coach, and a referee are at fever pitch preparing their body and mind to achieve their ultimate goals.

''The local touch community will be tuned in to watch our homegrown talent take on the world.''

Each player must pay their own way to the tournament and many of the group are working on fundraising efforts to cover their expenses.

''Along with their work and study commitments, the players are working hard to fundraise $5000 each to pay for their trip to Kuala Lumpur.'' Milne said.

Four of Otago's national champion under-18 women's side will run out for New Zealand at the tournament.

McKayler Moore, Olivia O'Neill, Meg Sycamore and Jessica Faulks have all been selected in the national under-18 women's team.

The New Zealand under-20 women's side also has a significant Otago flavour.

Abbey Johnston and Kiana Pelasio are joined by debutante Jordyn Taylor and the team is coached by Dayna Turnbull.

The New Zealand under-20 mixed team features Otago players Atawhai Hotene and Kane Johnston and Josh Duff will play for the under-20 men's team.

Jordan Hand will run out for New Zealand's under-18 men's side and Sam Rowe will play for the national under-18 mixed.

Otago Touch will also be represented by referee Courtney Hawke, who is studying at Otago University this year.

''Courtney has been with us a short time but already is respected within our province,'' Milne said.

''Having another positive female role model in Otago is very exciting.''
