ODT Online rugby contributor Jeff Cheshire rates the Highlanders on their performance against the Rebels on Friday night.

Ben Smith 7/10: Scored a try, was involved in another and made a few good breaks from the back but like the other backs did not see much ball in the second half.

Kade Poki 6/10: Was dangerous with ball in hand and made some good breaks but also missed a few tackles down his wing.

Jason Emery 6/10: Was fairly tidy in a backline that was functioning well in the first half and was generally good on defence.

Tamati Ellison 6.5/10: Kept tackling all night when everything was capitulating around him and was strong running in the first half.

Hosea Gear 7/10: Strong with ball in hand and looked for work regularly, often coming off his wing to get more involved.

Colin Slade 7/10: Had another good night, ran hard at the line, found his runners well and was accurate kicking at goal.

Aaron Smith 6.5/10: Added spark in the first half and provided good service to his backs and his runners. Made a few mistakes though and missed a couple of tackles.

TJ Ioane 7/10: Ran hard and kept popping up around the field. Got to plenty of rucks too, although he did throw a couple of loose passes.

Mose Tuialii 6/10: Did well considering he was playing out of position, made his tackles and was good at line out time.

Jake Parangatai 5/10: Made a couple of good runs and a few tackles, was solid but did not exactly stamp his authority on the game.

Josh Bekhuis 5.5/10: Bit of a mixed bag, did a few good things running the ball and on defence, but also made some mistakes.

Brad Thorn 6/10: Worked hard in the tight all night, was a strong ball runner and tackling.

Ma'afu Fia 6.5/10: Got around the field well and was strong at the pick and go. Was part of a dominant scrum too, which struggled after he left.

Andrew Hore 6/10: Managed to snaffle a few turnovers at the tackle and the breakdown and was strong around the ruck.

Tony Woodcock 6/10: Part of a dominant scrum in the first half, but then also part of a struggling one in the second. Made a few good tackles and got a turnover, but also missed a few too, one of which was a first-up tackle which led to a try.

Liam Coltman 5.5/10: Came on for the last 20 minutes, made his tackles and tried to get a few turnovers although the momentum was gone by this stage which was made this tough.

Bronson Murray 4.5/10: The scrum seemed to struggle once he came on and that is a big black mark. Left the field after 19 minutes with an injury.

Joe Wheeler 5/10: Tried to work hard as always, making a few tackles but also falling off a couple as well. Supported the ball carrier well in his first stint on the field while Parangatai was in the blood bin.

Fumiaki Tanaka 5.5/10: Did not get too many chances as the team was defending most of the time he was on. Tackled bravely and looked to scrap around the fringes.

Hayden Parker 6/10: Made his tackles and kicked a pressure goal in the dying stages of the game, although did not get much to do with the ball other than clear from his own line.

Shaun Treeby 5/10: Another who just never got any chances on attack, while getting stranded a couple of times on defence.
