The Highlanders will go into their first home game buoyed by victory but fully aware of the task ahead of them.

The side will start preparations today for Friday night's game against the Chiefs at Carisbrook, fresh from the confidence boost of a win over the Hurricanes in Wellington on Friday night.

The 14-9 win was the first victory by the side in an opening game in the competition for four years, while on Saturday night the Chiefs went down 28-20 to the Brumbies in Canberra.

Highlanders assistant coach Simon Culhane said neither the coaching staff nor the players would be getting carried away with the win.

"We created a number of opportunities and did not nail them. We had the chance to put the Hurricanes away way earlier in the game and could not convert those chances," he said.

"Don't get me wrong. It was a great way to start the season and is good for our side. But there are obviously things that we need to work on.

"The scrum went pretty well, [but] the lineout was under pressure, so we've got to get that right."

The Chiefs were slow out of the blocks against Canberra and never had the lead, winger Lelai Masaga's try at the death to making the score more respectable.

"They obviously showed a lot of tenacity to come back from where they were. They'll be hurting a lot from what happened over there," Culhane said.

The Highlanders have reported no serious injuries from the victory over the Hurricanes, just the usual bumps and bruises from a rugged encounter.

After the match against the Chiefs, the side leaves for South Africa, to take on the Bulls and the Stormers.
