The franchise had initially signalled it would play all eight of its home games at Forsyth Barr Stadium in its first year at the new complex, but after discussions with Rugby Southland it has agreed to move the game against the Rebels to Invercargill.
The match, to be played on March 30, could possibly be Jimmy Cowan's 100th game in a Highlanders jersey. If the Southland halfback plays the opening five games in next year's competition he will bring up his century of games for the southern franchise on his home ground.
The Highlanders start their Super 15 campaign next year with a match against the Chiefs in Hamilton on February 25.
They will play seven games at Forsyth Barr Stadium.
The side has also organised three pre-season games, with only one at home.
The first match is on February 3 against the Crusaders in Greymouth. That is followed by a game against the Chiefs in Queenstown on February 11.
The final warm-up match will be against the Blues in Auckland on February 17, a week before the competition kicks off.
The Highlanders have played these three sides in pre-season games over the past few years.
The first match at the new stadium will take place on March 3 when the Highlanders face the Crusaders.
The squad assembles this weekend and starts training on Monday.
The Highlanders finished eighth in the competition last season after an encouraging start. With some new signings, hopes are high for a successful year.
The Rebels made their competition debut last year and finished last after showing some promise. They have signed talented backs Kurtley Beale and James O'Connor for next season.
The Highlanders beat the Rebels 40-18 last season in Melbourne.
Season tickets for the franchise go on sale today.
