Rugby: Moore decides against major changes

Highlanders coach Glenn Moore had not pressed the panic button, though his options were limited when he named his side to take on the Hurricanes in the Super 14 match in Dunedin tomorrow night.

With the side coming off the bye, following the disappointing 41-27 loss to the Force, Moore has decided against making wholesale changes.

Fullback Israel Dagg has made a quick recovery from the groin strain he sustained before the match against the Force and is named in the team. Ben Smith moves back to the right wing, replacing James Paterson.

Michael Hobbs returns to the side in place of Mathew Berquist. Hobbs missed the match against the Force because of a thigh injury but is now 100% and gets the start in the critical first five-eighth position.

The Highlanders have tried three players in the No 10 jersey, one of the reasons the side is in 11th position on the table.

But Hobbs had looked promising at the start of the season and will be eager to get back to work after a spell out.

The forward pack remains intact, though Moore may have been tempted to give Southland lock Joe Tuineau or loose forward John Hardie a run.

Injuries to hooker Jason Macdonald and halfback Sean Romans have meant a move on to the Highlanders bench for Peter Mirrielees and Scott Cowan.

With the side facing no chance of making the top four, and having picked up only two wins from nine games, it must make the most of its last four games to salvage anything from the season.

The Hurricanes bring a talented side to Carisbrook and are desperate to keep winning.

Eight points behind the fourth-placed Reds, the side from the capital needs to win its last four games and have other results go its way if it is to make it to the play-offs.

It will be chasing a bonus-point win, and with 10 past or present All Blacks in the starting line-up it has firepower to do the job.

Tyson Keats keeps the halfback jersey, ahead of Piri Weepu, who remains on the bench.

Weepu missed last week's game against the Brumbies because of a bereavement.

Hurricanes coach Colin Cooper said Keats was in form and had made the most of the opportunity of getting a start, but Weepu was bound to get some game time.

Captain Andrew Hore was in doubt this week with a cut to a knee, but he has been cleared to play and will take the field.

Centre Conrad Smith has been in fine form, and paired with Ma'a Nonu, who looks to be coming back into some form, they will be a challenge for the Highlanders backline.
