To have life membership awarded to a parent and child is indeed rare. Even rarer is if both are still alive.
But it has happened twice in Otago rugby over the past few weeks.
Roger Brocklebank was named a life member of the Southern club last month following in the footsteps of his father, Cyril.
Cyril Brocklebank (88) was made a life member of the club in 1983 after a long period of service to the South Dunedin club.
He had played, coached and also been on the committee, including as president, for the club.
He still gets down to Bathgate Park when he can.
His three sons all played for Southern and Roger played right through the grades.
As a hooker, he had to play in behind the likes of Eion Willis and Mark Hill but still played more than 200 games for the club.
After ending his playing days, he moved into coaching and coached players of the calibre of All Blacks Isitolo Maka and Tom Willis.
Roger (56) has worked hard over the years in the back rooms of the club and always been on the committee.
It is the third father and son duo to be made life members at Southern.
Vic Cavanagh and Vic Cavanagh jun were life members while Mike Reggett was elected a life member in 2009 following in the footsteps of his father, Ron.
Following on from the Brocklebanks were the Lattas in South Otago.
John Latta and his mother, Zoe, were awarded life membership of the Owaka club. John Latta played 66 games for Otago in the 1980s while his mother had been a stalwart of the club for many years.
Jim Berney was also made a life member of Owaka.
Former Otago midfielder Bill Somerville was also made a life member of Southern last month.
Mal Carmichael was made a life member at Alhambra-Union while John Stringer was made a life member at West Taieri.
Other new life members were: Norman Marsh and Michelle Bain (Roxburgh), Lisa Spark (Arrowtown), Doug Boyes (Taieri), and Grant Murray and Damien O'Connell (Wakatipu).
