ODT Online rugby writer Jeff Cheshire rates the Otago players after their 34-17 loss to Tasman in their ITM Cup match  in Dunedin last night.

Peter Breen 4.5/10: Nothing spectacular on attack and missed a cover tackle on Robbie Malneek which led to Tasman's fourth try.

Matt Faddes 5/10: Tried to create and ran hard, but did not get the ball in space. Straight dropped a kick in the dying seconds of the first half, which gave Tasman a scrum that they eventually scored from.

Jayden Spence 5/10: Tidy although nothing more. Is in a tough position with the team playing so laterally putting him under a lot of pressure.

Tei Walden 4.5/10: Another who was quiet and did not offer much on attack, although did make one useful run up the left in the first half.

Jack Wilson 5.5/10: The most lively back, tried to inject himself although was always well-contained. Was another who straight dropped a ball standing at first receiver.

Fletcher Smith 4.5/10: Had a tough night, did not kick well, passed behind the man a bit and made a few handling errors. Made a couple of good breaks in the final ten minutes, one which sparked a try and a second which nearly did, although it was too little too late by that stage.

Josh Renton 4.5/10: Pass was solid generally, although did not kick well or threaten at all.

Charlie O'Connell 4.5/10: Was fended off by Marty Banks in the first minute, which resulted in a try. Tried hard after that, particularly in the kick chase and scored a try from not giving up on one.

Adam Knight 6/10: Pretty solid in his first game at openside flanker. Tackled well and made a couple of good runs, although got caught on the scrum which left the gap for Billy Guyton to make his long run prior to the third try.

Josh Dickson 5.5/10: Did well at lineout time. Was used primarily in his normal ranging role and did okay at times, although did not get too many chances in the open given the scrapiness of the game.

Tom Franklin 7/10: Otago's best and showed that he is a level above most of the rest of the team. Got involved in the tight and made his tackles. Ran a good line to score his try.

Blair Tweed 5.5/10: Another who tried hard in the tight and got himself involved. Dropped a lineout which went straight through his hands.

Hisa Sasagi 4.5/10: Had a good start although became quieter thereafter. Was under pressure from Tim Perry at scrum time.

Liam Coltman 6.5/10: Made a strong run which put Otago into position to score their second try. Was physical in contact and got through plenty of work.

Craig Millar 5.5/10: Got around the field well and offered a bit in general play, although was part of a scrum that struggled at times.

Sam Anderson-Heather 5/10: Solid, got around the park alright, although came on after the game had become disjointed and was hard to really stand out.

Donald Brighouse 5/10: Played the last 20 minutes after Aki Seiuli left with injury. Had a couple of ball carries, but was not hugely prominent.

Aki Seiuli (No Rating): Came on in the second half and then left not long after, without really getting a chance to make an impact.

Mika Mafi 5.5/10: Got through plenty of work on attack and defence after replacing O'Connell five minutes into the second half.

Naulia Dawai 7/10: One of Otago's best again. Came on and brought energy, made a couple of big tackles and had one good run near the end after being put into space by Fletcher Smith.

Kaide Whiting 5/10: No more than average, although was generally tidy. Tried to spark something with a handful of quick taps at the end, although it might have been better to kick for the corner and try to set up a drive.

Sio Tomkinson 5.5/10: Definitely thrown in the deep end, but was pretty solid on debut. Made a couple of tackles, did not shy away from contact and showed the ability to offload in the tackle.

Michael Collins 5.5/10: Defended well and had a couple of nice touches on attack.
