Rugby: Securing win no easy task

The Highlanders have gained their first victory of the season - now they need to make winning a habit.

But securing victory at Newlands in Cape Town is not the easiest of assignments against a Stormers side that has conceded just two tries in three games.

Highlanders hooker Jason Rutledge said the side had studied tapes of the Stormers' games, and looked at ways to get in behind the home side's defence.

"Over the last three games once we've gone past three or four phases we've really stretched teams and got in behind them.

That is the key - to keep hold of the ball and create some angles to try and get past their defence," Rutledge said.

"Our set-piece has been going along well and the line-out and scrum have been good. We just need them to keep them humming along, as they have a good set-piece.

"One game does not make or break you in this competition, and we haven't played much at home. But what this competition does show you to have any chance of being up near the top then you have to win your games away from home."

Rutledge, who will mark fiery hooker Tiaan Liebenberg, feels he is growing into the role as he is now the No 1 rake in the franchise.

"I'm feeling a lot more confident in the role. The more games you play at this level then the more you get used to it."

Rutledge has popped up all over the field and will have to do so again tomorrow morning against a Stormers side that welcomes back skipper Schalk Burger.

Burger missed last week's narrow loss to the Brumbies because of a hamstring injury but has recovered to take his place.

The Stormers played out a dreary kicking duel with the Brumbies in a defence-dominated game, in which one poor pass from Stormers prop Brok Harris decided the match.

The home side has changed halfback, with Ricky Januarie going to the bench and Dewaldt Duvenage coming in.

The Highlanders retain the side that beat the Cheetahs, with fullback Israel Dagg set to start as goal-kicker.

Rutledge said it had been sunny and hot in Cape Town during the week but the stadium should be in a shadow by the time the game kicks off.

The Highlanders need to hold on to the ball in tight conditions and use the skills of backs such as Dagg and Michael Hobbs to try to get over the tryline.

Mark Lawrence comes in to referee the match, replacing an injured Stu Dickinson.
