Rugby: Supporters looking at new premises

The Otago Rugby Supporters Club is hopeful of moving to new premises by the start of next season.

The club held its annual meeting on Tuesday night and discussed where the club rooms would be located in the future.

The Supporters Club is on the ground floor of the terrace complex at Carisbrook but faces an uncertain future as the Otago union moves to the new stadium after the Rugby World Cup and the Dunedin City Council takes over as landlord.

The club had reserves of about $100,000 and may be forced to dip into those to pay commercial rents to the council after October this year.

Club chairman Fred Cross said ideally the club would like to move to somewhere close to the new stadium although finance meant it was unlikely to be inside the stadium. He said the club was looking at rooms near the stadium but declined to say where as negotiations were continuing.

Also at the meeting, a proposal to allow those aged under 18 into the club rooms was narrowly defeated.
