This is the ultimate motivator. Not trophies, not cash, but ice creams for all.

In something of an off-the-wall promotion, Monte Carlo Milk Bar owner Mike Casey has put a deal on the line for all his customers.

Casey, who manages the Taieri premier club side, will give away ice creams from his Mosgiel shop for an hour after every Air New Zealand Cup game involving Otago, if a Taieri player scores a try.

With four Taieri players in the squad - winger Ryan Shortland, inside back Michael Witt, loose forward Charlie O'Connell, and hooker Jason Macdonald - the ice cream deal may soon be in action.

"Ryan's been scoring a few tries and Witty [Michael Witt] is getting a run, while Charlie is there or thereabouts. Jason's been starting all the games, so I could be in trouble," Casey said.

"We should have enough ice cream to go around. But it's only one each."

Casey said he wanted to get in behind the Otago team and, with the Taieri connection, decided on the promotion.

The four players were lapping up the deal this week, happily sampling the ice cream during a break from training.
