Rugby: Triggs right at home in Manawatu

Hayden Triggs is one player who will not need to be ushered to the home dressing room when the Highlanders play the Bulls in a Super 14 match in Palmerston North tomorrow night.

Triggs, 27, played 70 games for Manawatu between 2002 and last year and for much of that time was employed as a mechanic at the Linton Military Camp.

He signed to play for Otago in this year's Air NZ Cup but admitted it was a "tough" decision as Manawatu rugby had been a big part of his life.

"I've got a lot of fond memories," he said.

"I've got a lot of good mates in Palmerston North who I still keep in touch with.

"I'm sure the Manawatu community will get behind the game and it's going to be great to have a training run at Linton Military Camp and be hosted by them afterwards."

Triggs said he believed his teammates were positive about playing a home game outside the Highlanders catchment area.

"I think it's awesome. The boys are looking forward to it. It's a new venue, a new group of fans that we can grab hold of and really pull in behind us. I think it will be quite refreshing mentally."

But Triggs is conscious the unbeaten Bulls will pose a much greater challenge than did the winless Cheetahs at Carisbrook in Dunedin last Saturday.

"They're top of the table. They've got big, physical forwards and some exciting backs. But we maintain we've got a pretty physical pack and some slick backs.

"It will be a big test for us but it's good to come off a decisive win last weekend. Our spirits are high and we want to carry on our improved form.

"We haven't played a full 80 minutes this season yet but we made progress last weekend.

"We compete well in the tight, our loosies are playing well and our backs are starting to finish off."

Triggs, who has played 18 games for the Highlanders since he was drafted to the region last year, has been reasonably happy with his form this season.

"There's some pretty strong competition in my position (lock) which brings out the best in the group. You've got to perform at every training. I'm enjoying my footy and I just want to keep on a roll.

"I don't want to come down with second-year-itis. I just want to be selected and to be on the pitch as often as I can for as long as I can.

"I've put on a bit more size this year (having bulked up 6kg to 114kg) and I just want to get into a rhythm of doing my job in every game."

Triggs will lock the scrum with Tom Donnelly against the Bulls in one of two changes to the starting 15 who beat the Cheetahs 32-8.

The other is at loosehead prop where Jamie Mackintosh will start in place of Chris King while Fetu'u Vainikolo will replace Lucky Mulipola in the backs reserves.
