Smith was a special guest at the under-8 team's training session at Miller Park yesterday, and put the 11 players through their paces with games of touch and tackle bullrush, and some passing and tackling drills.
He finished with a six-on-six game, during which he took the field to make up numbers.
Tony McFadgen, the team's co-coach, saw Smith at the Green Island clubrooms on Saturday and asked the All Black and loyal club member to come along.
Smith duly obliged in between his Super 15 campaign and his All Black commitments.
''I've got holidays at the moment, so it's good to come along,'' the 15-test All Black said.
The youngsters weren't afraid to test Smith's conditioning, either. They were raring to go at the scheduled 4pm start time and paused only briefly to take further instructions from the star of the Highlanders season.
''They're some pretty energetic little kids - I'm struggling to keep up.''
Smith, who has been at the club since first lacing on his boots at a similar age to yesterday's group, was pleased to see the next generation of green and gold players warming to their task with the oval ball in hand.
''There are definitely some handy players in here and it's just cool they enjoy rugby and getting out here.''
