School rivalry will lift a notch this weekend.

The Southern Schools Rugby Championship has reached the semifinal stage.

Southland Boys’ have set the benchmark all season and they are expected to record a comfortable win against John McGlashan in the opening division1 semi in Invercargill today.

They beat them 61-0 in mid-July.

Likewise, King’s will start as warm favourites when they host Otago Boys’.

They were too powerful up front and posted a 31-17 win at Littlebourne two weekends ago.

Oamaru will be divided. Waitaki Boys’ and St Kevin’s will face off in a division 2 semifinal. Waitaki have the home advantage, while Southland Boys’ 2nds will host Dunstan in Invercargill in the other playoff.

In the third-tier plate competition, South Otago will play Otago Boys’ 2nds in Balclutha and Wakatipu are at home to Mt Aspiring.

Wakatipu and Mt Aspiring are evenly matched, so it promises to be an exciting game. South Otago shape as the favourites. They beat Otago Boys’ 2nds 27-14 in Dunedin in June.

In the bowl, Central Southland will welcome Māruawai-Menzies to Winton and King’s 2nds will host Taieri in the other division 4 semifinal.

There is one other match. John McGlashan will host Cromwell in the battle for the wooden spoon.
