Three of Heriot's sons travelled home from Australia to see a fitting celebration of the Heriot Rugby Club's 125th jubilee at the weekend.

Alan Jane and brothers Gary and Roger Brenssell watched Heriot beat Lawrence 22-18 on Saturday to regain the West Otago Shield.

Grant Brenssell has been on the Gold Coast for the past 20 years, brother Roger has been living in Darwin for 12 years, and Jane has been in Queensland for 23 years.

All three are former Heriot players, and said the celebration was something they could not miss.

"They sent the invitation out to members, and my mum sent it to me.

"It's good to see you are still considered to be part of the club," Jane said.

The three ex-pats stood on the sidelines with about 300 people to watch the premier game, won in dramatic fashion by Heriot.

Grant Brenssell said all three former players had a passion for rugby, the All Blacks, family and the Heriot club.

Being involved with the Heriot club had given him friends for life and an understanding of people, Brenssell said.

"Rugby keeps kids off the streets, keeps them fit and teaches them people skills.

"It brings the community together. It's good to see the spirit is still alive."

There were lots of friendly after-match jibes passed between the rival Heriot and Lawrence teams.

Heriot president Tony Pryde said he played for Heriot at under-12 level and went right through the grades.

"Then I played 10 years for Lawrence. There were a few bets going down today."

Pryde played for the Heriot under-16 team in the centennial year, and said he intended to be there for the 150th celebrations.

The ex-pats are also keen to come back in 25 years.

"I'm looking forward to the 150th," Grant Brenssell said.
