Sam Whitelock has retired after an outstanding career. But where does he rate in the list of best New Zealand locks? Hayden Meikle has the answer.

1. Sam Whitelock (153 tests)

Yep, No 1 for me. He had the total package of skills, and his durability and influence propel him into the top spot. Sorry, Pinetree fans.

2. Colin Meads (55 tests)

He set the standard for so long. Imagine a second-row partnership of Meads and Whitelock ... swoon.

3. Brodie Retallick (109 tests)

Probably the best pure lock we have seen at his peak, to be fair.

4. Ian Jones (79 tests)

Kamo was our first real lineout superstar and also our last really great skinny lock.

5. Robin Brooke (62 tests)

Formed a wonderful combination with Jones. Zinny’s brother was a no-nonsense type who had immense power and high work rate.

6. Gary Whetton (58 tests)

Had athleticism and pace to go with his aerial skills and moustache.

7. Ali Williams (77 tests)

Revelled in his clown persona, but had a phenomenal range of skills.

8. Stan Meads (15 tests)

Pinetree rated him, so that is good enough for me.

9. Chris Jack (67 tests)

His performances fell away markedly, and there was something about his personality that jarred with many, but he was a very good lock in his best years.

10. Peter Whiting (20 tests)

"Pole" — the best nickname a lock has ever had.

Just missing out: Brad Thorn (59 tests), Sam Strahan (17), Murray Pierce (26).

Obscure locks you have forgotten: James Broadhurst (1), Greg Rawlinson (4), Glenn Taylor (1), Chris Tregaskis (zero tests but four games).
