Otago twice close to medals

Otago was unable to add to its medal haul in Auckland on Tuesday night, although it went close in two races.

Jessica Scott narrowly missed out on bronze in the 200m butterfly at the national open championships.

The 16-year-old Neptune swimmer finished fourth in the final.

Her time of 2min 20.81sec was just shy of her Otago record.

Madison Wills (15), of the Kiwi club, finished fifth in the 400m individual medley.

She swam 5min 07.30sec, although she was next in line for a medal as Australian Ella Ramsay was one of the four to finish ahead of her.

Yesterday morning, Neptune's Ben Carr qualified for the A final of the 100m butterfly in 55.46sec.

Erika Fairweather, also of Neptune, streaked away to qualify first in the 400m freestyle in 4min 16.86sec - 2.5sec ahead of second.

Caitlin Deans was also in with a medal shot, qualifying fifth in 4min 20.53sec.

Wanaka's Hamish McLean was first in the para 400m freestyle heats.
