Authorities are investigating after several complaints were made about exhaust emissions from a cruise ship docked in Lyttelton Harbour.

An ECan spokesperson told chrislynchmedia.com it received inquiries from the public on Wednesday about the emissions from the Celebrity Edge cruise ship.

"We are closely monitoring the discharge and are working with Maritime NZ who is the agency responsible for the prevention of air pollution from ships,” the spokesperson said.

Lyttelton Port Company also contacted the cruise ship after concerns were raised by the public.

"They have confirmed that a closed-loop exhaust cleaning system is operational onboard," an LPC spokesperson told chrislynchmedia.com.

"Lyttelton Port Company is closely monitoring air emissions at several locations around the port, including particulate matter, sulphur oxide, and nitrogen oxide.

"Results will be shared with the community once the monitoring process is complete."

It was the final cruise ship scheduled to dock in Lyttelton this season.
