A convicted violent stalker who attacked his ex-fiancée in Hawke’s Bay has appeared in a Christchurch court this week on similar charges.

Hayden Esmond Reginald Howard Keil (right), 29, stood in front of community magistrate Sally O’Brien in the district court on Tuesday charged with breaching a protection order.

It was alleged on August 7 Keil went to, and stayed at, the workplace of a protected person in Ashburton, and sent her a snapchat message.

It comes after he was sentenced to seven months home detention at an address in Christchurch on August 20 for 10 charges in the Napier District Court.

The charges included assaulting with intent to injure, assault on a person in a family relationship, assault with a blunt instrument, wilful damage, reckless driving, burglary and breaching a protection order.

When his ex-fiancée tried to break off their engagement, he reacted by punching her in the head eight times before he held her down on a bed by the neck for about 10 seconds.

In the following days, Keil put a tracker on her car.

When she spotted his vehicle,  she went to the Hastings police station for help. Upon exiting, Keil drove directly at her onto the footpath before hitting a sign.

The next day, he broke into her house and moved some of her intimate possessions. Police were alerted and found him on the roof.

Though he was charged and on electronically-monitored bail in Christchurch, Keil continued to send her social media messages.

At his sentencing, Judge Gordon Matenga told Keil his fiancée had no inclination of his “dark side” before the attack.

Keil had earlier been sentenced to intensive supervision for assaulting a female, wilful trespass and four breaches of a protection order in 2016.

Keil is due to appear in court again on Tuesday.
